Birth Anniversary of Imam Hasan (AS)

Dated: July 2, 2015

On the auspicious day  of 15th Ramadhan of the Islamic calendar, the World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) congratulates the world on the birth anniversary of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him and his holy family), the second divinely appointed leader of the Muslims after the Prophet, Imam Hasan (peace be upon him). He was the  first born child of Ali ibn Abu Talib and the Prophet’s daughter Fatima (peace be upon them both), born in the 3rd year after hijrah, 624 CE.

The world only tends to remember and focus on the issue of the peace treaty that Imam Hasan entered with Muawiya, when remembering Imam Hasan. Indeed Imam Hasan saved the Muslim nation from bloodshed by entering the peace treaty. However there are many illustrious examples that we can take from his pure and pious life to help guide us through our lives on earth. Imam Hasan was a most God-fearing man: narrations tell us that he would weep at the remembrance of death, and would often faint at the thought of standing before God on Judgement Day. His ethics were excellent: people would flock to be around him just to catch a glimpse of his blessed face and hear his wise gentle words.

Imam Hasan is renowned for meeting people’s needs over and above their demands. His generosity knew now bounds. He is remembered for his daily spread of food where anyone and everyone was invited to eat. This practice, of generous food tables laid out for people, is still prevalent among believers today, in emulation of Imam Hasan.

Let us also not forget that Imam Hasan is mentioned in the Quran, as one of the 5 whom the Prophet peace be upon him and his family, was instructed to take with him to debate the Christians of Najran. He is also one of the 5 who was under the cloak of the Prophet and declared as the pure ones by Allah. In both these incidents he was still a child. We can thus only assume his esteemed status with Allah.

Some of his well-known sayings are:

·         O' Son of Adam! Since the day you left your mother's womb your life has been on the decrease. Therefore, avail yourself of that between your hands for the hereafter, because the believer takes provisions (from this world) and the disbeliever only takes his leisure (from this world).

·         If you fail to obtain something of worldly benefit, take it as if the thought of it had never crossed your mind at all.

·         Never did a nation resort to mutual counsel except that they were guided by it towards maturity.

·         It is love which brings closer those who are remote by ancestry, and it is (the absence of) love which causes dissociation between those who are related by ancestry.

Today as the Heavens and the Earth rejoice, WABIL extends its warmest wishes to all on the coming to the world of this exemplary saviour for mankind, Imam Hasan, and wishes that Muslims and all humankind take more lessons from this great divine Leader.
