Question:

Salam Alykum, My son has a student loan of £15,000 and has been working for almost a year (Jan 31) having saved up £10,000. I was wondering if he has to pay khums on his savings (£10,000) at the end of the year or is khums not applicable to him as he has an outstanding loan. Also for your annual khums date should you follow the lunar calendar or is it permissible to follow the solar calendar according to the rulings of Sayed Sistani? Thank you for your advice, may Allah bless you Khudahafiz

Answer:

Only the amount of repayment which is due immediately should be
deducted from the savings, and rest must be applied for Khums.
Calculation of Khums should be according to lunar year.
Wassalam.
