Condemnation of Car Bomb Attacks in Baghdad, Wednesday 11 May 2016

Dated: May 11, 2016

World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League (WABIL) utterly condemns the terrorist car bomb attacks that have been perpetrated in Sadr City, Kazimiya and Jamia areas of Baghdad this Wednesday, killing over 100 people. The deadliest attack was in a market place in Sadr city, killing innocent women and children, including two brides on their wedding day. Two suicide bombers then attacked the check points at Kazimiya and Jamia, leaving a further 29 dead. The so-called Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility.

These are horrific cowardly attacks on innocent civilians. IS targeted Shias, particularly on the birth celebrations of Imam Hussain (as). This shows not only their open enmity with the Prophet Muhammad and his holy progeny (as), but also that these criminals are far removed from Islam.

WABIL condoles the Iraqi victims’ families and the government which is using all its efforts to fight this menace. IS are mercenaries funded by outside elements to operate within Iraq, in order to destabilise the country and discredit its Shia – led government.  We offer our sympathy and support to the government in its fight against this terrorism and we urge the international community that it must condemn this crime against humanity offer all necessary assistance to the Iraqi government in its fight against terror.
